Adorning the Female Form

The fashion media fails to represent a realistic image of the diversity of women. To gauge ourselves on the imagery sold around us is torturous. I accept the role of the media and do not seek to battle it. My work however, is in the transformation of individual women by working with the reality of their bodies and the wonder of their spirits. My design process is collaborative and organic. I seek to understand the reality of the client's body and their personality. I design to suit the body first, then layer the design with the wearer's personal style and polish it with simplicity and elegance. It is a very personal journey for most women. I have recently used this process with a client who is an amputee, missing an arm and a shoulder. A rewarding experience for both designer and client, for the first time since her accident three years ago this woman is now able to confidently walk down the street in fitted, feminine clothes, proud of her own body, without prosthesis or camoflauge.

This paper will discuss the transformation and development of our individual aesthetic self-image, especially when confronted by contradictory media imagery. For the real woman, fashion design is about problem solving our changing bodies and improving self-image rather than undermining it through comparison.
