Knitwear design has come a long way from its traditional heredity and is an art that has had a great resurgence of late. Knit designers are shifting away from the traditional yarns and processes and developing experimental avant-garde techniques that are utilised within a wide spectrum of applications, including garments, accessories, objects and homewares. Garment shapes and silhouettes are also being challenged, creating new forms and contemporary garment design. This paper will explore some of the new innovations in knitwear design and focus on the utilisation of these techniques within the knitted entity. It references the research of Sandy Black (Knitwear in Fashion - London College of Fashion, London, UK), which investigates global knitwear design.
