In I Corinthians Chapter 11 verse five, it states that "women should cover her head when at worship as a symbol of obedience to God".
For African-American women, of various Christian denominations, this is a cherished custom which is passed down from generation to generation. Africans have always showed pride in the way that they adorn themselves. When slaves were brought over to the United States, they were not able to express themselves through their clothing or their heads. However, as Christianity spreads to slaves, the only time slaves could adorn themselves was when they attended secret worship services. Some women would even come after a days work with their head wraps adorned in wildflowers. For African American woman, this would be the only time they could dress up and adorn their heads. This is why the hats they wear to Church are the most elaborate and beautiful. Many call them their "Crowns of Glory". These hats are not just worn for religious purposes, they are a way of making a fashion statement. For this was the only time an African-American women could feel like a Queen, and her" crown" the piece that completed the outfit.
